Call of the Wilderness

Curbar Edge by Les Wilcockson

Brief conversations in wild arias sung in ancient voices where grass and heather whisper the echoes of the wind on the horizon.

The lothario lover used to stand on that rock recalled heather aromatically

Even stone can smile in thoughts of love when the young alpha chased his damsel for a kiss.

Their pups would frolic in twilight, their play watched only by the wild hills grass murmured in its memory

And the stone sighed, recalling the coming of Man in a stench of death and extinction.

Winds howled, their sorrow too much to bear

Yet ears that do not listen only hear silence.

Summer

I watched you chase the shadows out to sea
while we played in borrowed time
against the odds we felt the summer sun
in those hazy days we thought we had won
the prize of life
of love
I heard your laughter trip across the waves
and dared to dream the impossible
unable to face the inevitable
saying goodbye
but it came anyway
so now I treasure those summer days
precious and free
when I held you
and you loved me.

Spring

Through melting snow life begins again
and new pathways meander through
the radiant green of stretching leaves
yawning awake in the cool calming air
and a sparrow flies across the sky
embracing the return of vernal days
while shards of sunlight kiss the skin
with the lips of love reborn

Winter

First flakes falling
like gentle kisses igniting the senses
while crumpets lean forward
grasping the warmth of winter flames
eyes close in memory
of seasons past
when love left impressions in the snow
and fingertips lingered here and there
in the dreams of dancing flames.

Autumn

She left on the autumn winds
as weary trees took on their vibrant dream
and the saddened heart walked away from love
while Nature’s clock keeps on ticking
the golden leaves twirled
with spirals of red
dry as the shattered senses
with tears frozen in time
in the acrimony of the impudent winds
thoughts linger among the dance of colours
unwanted now
as the creaking pole casts out
its final line
the winds form a far-reaching good-bye
and the summer died.

Blemished Heart (Strambotto Toscano) in The Poetic Round Forum

The memories return with the autumn leaves
And love’s old bruises burn in echoes of pain
Without an invitation a thought retrieves
The eternal need to feel your touch again
Each night sleeping eyes close as a dream believes
The sun will return to shine after the rain
For in the realms of sleep I know love is real
And in your embrace I am able to feel
